Please can anybody tell me, when replacing the cabin and fore hatch with new Gebos, should I buy “with flange” or without? And are there any alternatives to Gebo?

Thanks

electric windlass 0 Replies

Desi Stevens at 18/02/2010 11:58:19
As a first-time owner of a Contessa 32 I would greatly value advice in models and installation of an electric windlass. I have been looking at a low profile lewmar but have also seen a South Pacific VS1000 whose power consumption is much lower and has had good reviews. The anchor locker is not very large so there is the issue of stowage of chain/rope and the quantities that can be accommodated. Also any installation advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Guide to Contessa 32s 4 Replies

moongirl at 20/11/2009 20:52:56
I have more or less completed my personal Guide to CO32s – largely but not totally geared to ‘sorting’ boats for racing. However I am missing a few bits of general stuff and should be grateful for Owner’s input on the following (inc pictures in JPEG Format): Replacing bottom bracket on rudder Replacing rudder bearings Replacing propshaft bearings Replacing water tank I know there have been examples of the above on the Discussion Board but the aim of my Guide is to have most of the FAQs in one place and to be able to update it every once in a while when people make contributions to the Discussion Board.

JR & Harken have both shown interest in seeing the Guide but I shall have to ensure that they do not use it instead of advertising in the Magazine.

Anyone want to join a Yachtmaster First Aid course in Southampton on Mon 30 Nov?
I have just done Yachtmasters Practical and need to get this quickly. Rachel Andrews of Float Your Boat has been recommended. Course needs 3 more to run. Any interest? Full day, 30 Nov, Cost £70.

I’m a bit nostalgic and would like to keep the old log (it’s a Mariner? from Lymington) onboard. The problem is that the propeller has dissapeard. I wonder if anybody has any tips conserning this log, if it’s possible to get a new propeller etc.?

Or maybe it’s a silly project and I should consider a more modern speed/distance log?

Well the end of another year.

Tiptoe now lives up in Ardfern and therefore opportunities are fewer, we live near Chichester and I guess the season will start a bit later next year also.

A friend of ours is about to join the Clipper 09/10 in Australia and encouraged us to join in?! “What do you mean pack up work for 6 months and find £X0,000??!”. Not a chance so meanwhile we shall have to try and beat her virtually!

Enjoy! Wink

Smelly Contessa!!! 31 Replies

Colin Pritchard at 22/08/2009 11:08:55
I have started getting a pretty horrible smell emanating from the depths of my bilge especially during bashing about in rough seas. I seem to recall seeing a thread about something like this on the old discussion board, but can’t find it. Can anyone advise.

This post might appear as if from a new forum member, but I’m not really. My details seem to have disappeared so I’ve re-registered.

Many thanks.

Ultrasonic Antifouling 2 Replies

Penfold at 25/09/2009 21:53:35
Has anybody had practical experience of Ultrasonic Antifouling which I understand was launched at last years Southampton Boat Show and that there are 500 users.
Sunmaid is due to have her second dose of drying out and epoxy this winter and we were wondering if Ultrasonic is a viable system of antifouling to use on her ‘new’ clean bottom.

CO32 by Road Transport from Italy 5 Replies

MAS at 26/06/2009 23:16:30
I am looking to bring a CO32 back to the UK overland from Northern Italy. Can anyone recommend an organisation with competitive rates? I am flexible as to timing. Having made a few enquiries, it seems to be more expensive than I had, perhaps wrongly, anticipated. Thanks for any suggestions.

What anchors are others using? And how easily do they fit into the locker?
And where are you stowing yout kedge?

Contessa in a blow 14 Replies

GNGILPIN at 18/06/2009 01:49:25
I need advice from more experienced contessa sailors please. We were caught in a blow in south Irish a few weeks ago ( June 5/6 Fri / Sat) . The instruments said we had about mid-high twenties wind speed in knots. With number 4 headsail and three slabs down we were still on our ear at 45 degrees to the wind. The seas were ,to my mind , close together and steep about 7’ -9’ at a guess. The boat handled beautifully and the tiller was very light well balanced slight weather helm prehaps. We eventually took down the mailsail and made up to weather 50 degrees or so on number 4 alone into ARKLOW ..SE Ireland. I suppose I should have put up the storm jib but was surprised that I would need it in only a force six / seven ….the tops were being blown off the waves.
Any thoughts observations would be welcome please.

ALSO I got water into lockers I did not think it was possible to get water into….on board we suspect it because the bilge was filling up ( as it was ; probably throught the aft cockpit locker ) and over flowing as we heeled over. ……

Thank you in anticipation.

Anchor's Revisited (Rocna) 11 Replies

George Isted at 13/07/2009 10:48:23
On the previous forum there was a little discussion around anchors that are used on Co32’s and what will fit.

Having had a few sleepless nights in the past I decided that anchor design has probably moved on a little in the past 70 years (the CQR was designed in 1933) and I have bought a Rocna 10. The Rocna one of the new generation of fast setting and high holding power anchors and so far (only used twice) it has done exactly “what it says on the tin”.

Most importantly – Does it fit in a Co32 anchor locker?

Answer – Yes but only just.

I hope this post will be of use to others that may be thinking of a change.

Insurance 0 Replies

George Isted at 15/10/2009 17:30:39
Some thoughts on insurance from reading another sailing forum….

Like many boat owners I remove electronic equipment (GPS, VHF, Autopilot, etc) from Concerto over the winter while the boat is on the hard as this not only removes the risk of kit being stolen over the winter if someone did break-in but also allows any trapped moisture or electric connections to dry out at home. Unfortunately, this can leave you in a difficult position if your home where to be burgled. On most home contents policies any equipment for your boat would not be covered under the home policy, however your boat insurance policy will only cover boat equipment if it is on the boat when it is stolen. So, if you do bring kit home for the winter AND it is stolen/fire damaged then you could end up with an expensive problem. I still plan to remove kit and take home but thought it was worth warning others of the potential insurance pitfall of doing so…
