Anti fouling experiences! 0 Replies

Tiptoe at 31/03/2012 13:16:03
As a result of our failed Copper Coat experience we find ourselves having to re-visit the very subject that we hoped we had laid to rest for 10+ years!

We are keen to go forward with an alternative multi season alternative but after our SeaJet Silicone debacle we shan’t be re-visiting Silicone either!

I appreciate fully that different anti fouls respond differently in different enviroments but does anyone have any experience of:
Awlgrip Gold Label
Micron Extra

Tiptoe is generally moored on The West Coast of Scotland.

If you do, or can suggest an alternative >1 season solution, I would be glad to hear from you.

Best rgds

John

IMS Measurements 0 Replies

Galatea at 29/12/2011 03:54:14
I found on the web a copy of the “Ladybird II” IMS certificate. Out of curiosity, I tried to match up the nominal Contessa 32 specifications to the IMS measurements, but nothing corresponds exactly. for example, the LOA listed on the certificate is 9.656 m instead of 9.75 m, the beam is 2.858 m instead of 2.90 m, and Maximum Draft is 1.88 m instead of 1.68 m. The displacement in measurement trim (essentially dry and empty) is listed as 5571 kg v. 4309 kg (I suppose that is consistent with the deeper draft)

Do the measurements on this certificate seem roughly correct?

Visiting a CO32 in the South of England 1 Reply

chris at 01/12/2011 11:18:55
Hello,

I am currently in the UK and would love to show my girlfriend around a Contessa 32 before she makes the choice of joining me sailing across the Atlantic to Brazil.

My CO is currently 1200 miles away from the UK, I don’t want it to be a surprise when we get out there. If we could go sailing that would be awesome but I really just wanted to give her an idea of what she would be letting herself into.

Of course this is all just an excuse for me to ooogle at other CO32’s :D

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ultra Sound Antifoul 14 Replies

Alan Dixon at 06/11/2011 15:52:13
I intend to Coppercoat Charlotte this coming spring, in addition to this I am taken with the idea of filtting an Ultra sonic antifoul system as supplied by http://www.jaycarelectronics.co.uk/productView.asp?ID=KC5498. As I understand the system the Ultrasound prevents the build up of slime and algae that the growth feeds on, its that slime and algae that renders the coppercoat ineffective. One of these kits is effective for boats up to 32 feet. Current thoughts are to fit two; one positioned forward port side below heads and the other aft starboard side beside battery’s
Any words of wisdom appriciated

IRC changes 2012 1 Reply

christophe at 03/11/2011 11:25:20
Rules 21.7.1 and 21.7.3 are amended to remove the headsail widths minima in the interests of greater equity for boats with overlapping headsails or a roller furling headsail.

This is positive for our handicap under IRC, even when we keep on racing with our nr 1. Will the association apply for a revised handicap?

trimguide 2 Replies

christophe at 26/10/2011 19:06:56
Is it not an idea to create a trim/tining guide for the Contessa 32. This would be very helpfull for beginning racers but also very educative for cuisers.
I know that there is an article written by Ian Brown from Quantum Sails but the content is very limited. This can be also a motivation to start racing.

Very impressive co32 for sale 2 Replies

chris at 03/09/2011 12:21:59
Really like what this owner has done to their boat, shows a lot of love, the shower / toilet idea is great, although lacking in head room.

Must have been expensive to do all that work, replacing the electrics, table, sole …. question is will people spend the extra 40k for it.

Contessa 32 with blisters 12 Replies

acr98075 at 20/08/2011 18:32:56
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help with some advice.
I am looking at a 1981 Contessa 32 (Canadian Contessa – JJ Taylor built), a really nice boat, but as per the 2003 survey.
“Numerous 1/2 to 1 inch diameter liquid filled blisters are evident over mosy of the hull underbody surface.”
Should I be concerned?
Is it worth going ahead with a survey?
Has anyone had experience of blisters/blister repairs on a Contessa?
Is repair of Gelcoat or laminate costly and or effective?

As mentioned the I like the boat but not sure if I should procede with survey due to blister concern

Congratulations again to all 3!

VAT status 2 Replies

ODL at 24/03/2011 19:32:12
I have had my offer accepted for a seemingly well looked after Co32 with a good inventory and satisfactory survey.

However, both listing brokers have Mis-represented her as tax paid when regrettably there is no invoice/receipt as proof of such. She was originally sold by JR to a Belgian owner and thus wasn’t tax paid when she left Lymington. Upon arrival back in the UK vat was supposedly paid in 1989 though the current owner/broker has no evidence to substantiate this claim.

I would like to put the question to current owners if this situation would have discouraged them from completing the sale and if they think it would be difficult to then sell the boat at a later date? Also, are the members aware of many Co32’s which have un-confirmed vat status?

All thoughts/comments most welcome, regards, ODL

Boat ran aground - 2 Replies

chris at 12/02/2011 19:31:01
Made a bit of a daft mistake, took a risk and was worried how the Contessa would behave.

As it turns out fully laden with 150l of fuel and 300 of water and three big men the water never went above the genoa travellers. Water came in through the sea leg fittings (I don’t have the legs) and the water came out of the tank vent. No damage.

These boats are so graceful!! Will definitely do this again to scrape her off / paint her.

Maintenance Budget 4 Replies

ODL at 09/02/2011 17:52:54
Hi, I am viewing Co32’s with intent and look forward to joining you all (as an owner) this Spring.

I have previous boat maintenance experience but was fortunate to be the one that wasn’t writing the cheques!

In preparation for making a real success of ownership I am trying to research the maintenance costs associated with running a Co32.

I have budgeted £2.5k for insurance, spares, repairs, engineers, upgrades, etc.. Assuming that we ignore berthing, fuels, cruising expenses and sundries, how does my number compare to yours?!

I’d be particularly interested to hear from ‘lifers,’ i.e. those owners with several years of receipts, and wonder if budgets reduce with experience over time, remain constant, or tend to rise?

Otherwise, I would be glad of any interweb resources or articles that could demystify the fiscal reality of going sailing.

Regards, ODL

I notice the CO26 website has links to people who have taken their adventures into international waters. Is there anything similar on this site? Or perhaps books written while on a CO32?

Many thanks,

Engine control panel cockpit mounting 1 Reply

david williams at 20/09/2010 23:03:34
Does anyone have any thoughts as to where is the best position for remounting the engine control panel in the cockpit? Ideally I would like to put it just aft of the morse control below seat level and not have it set into the coamings but am I asking for trouble should we take on a big wave and the cockpit momentarily becomes a paddling pool?

Repainting decks - KiwiGrip 0 Replies

George Isted at 03/09/2010 11:00:08
Hi Everyone,
I thought this may be of interest to anyone with an older boat.

Anyone who knows Concerto will probably agree that her decks were not the best, they had been painted in the past ans this was flaking off in many places. While I has tried over a few winters to remove the deckpaint with GRP-safe paint remover it was long-winded and not very successful as deck paint is designed to resist chemicals and other spillages. I finally gave up on stripping the old paint and decided to refinish the decks using a new product (at least to the UK) called Kiwi Grip. I have fount that normal deck paint can be very course as it often contains sand or similar to give it the non-slip finish however this can be very coarse and unkind to both skin and clothing. The alternative, a smooth deck paint would look good but would not provide much grip. Kiwi grip on the other hand is not really paint-like at all, it goes on a bit like yogurt and you are provided with a textured roller that is used to get an even coating and then leaves a nicely stippled finish. The interesting bit is that you can control how much non-slip you want, in areas such as the foredeck or around the mast you can re-roller the coating when it has just started to dry or cure and this then leaves a coarser surface giving greater non-slip. I masked up and painted just the areas of non-slip that are moulded into the deck and the new stippled finish compliments the existing non-slip well, I did not think it necessary to re-roller for extra grip but have enough left over that this is an option in the future. Kiwigrip is also thick enough that is easily covers up hairline cracks and repairs to the deck. Mistakes and cleanup of the roller is easy, just wash with water before it cures, however this does mean you need a dry day to apply, ideally overcast as hot sunshine causes Kiwi grip to dry a bit too fast. Below are some before and after pics, the change is outstanding and I am extremely pleased with the result. There is a down side to Kiwigrip, it is more expensive that regular deck paint due to it’s composition (an acrylic polymer I believe but I am not an expert), that said it really was worth it. I bought 5L to ensure I had enough but only used about 3.5L so a 4L can should be plenty. Having been so impressed I have gone back to the distributor and arranged for a discount for association members. The chap to speak to is Paul Cleverley at Vitesse Marine (01329 232360)who are the only UK distributor, if you mention “Contessa 32 Association discount"; he has promised to honour a 10% discount off the normal price. I hope this is of interest to others as I was really impressed by the product and the colour match with the standard Co32 deck is pretty good. Before… After… Feel free to contact me if you have any comments or questions. Best wishes

Buying Our First Liveaboard? a Contessa? 2 Replies

portaparty at 15/07/2010 00:15:55
Hello all I have a few questions that I would love answered, I am having a contessa 32 surveyed july 20th and a very excited, been lookling for a cruiser/liveaboard for 5 years with my lady and think we may now be able to make the move. yay us!
so my questions to you all is.
1. what are the five most likely issues that a 81 contessa 32 is likely to have? one of the ones i am looking at is owned by the second owner and he and his wife have lived aboard since 85. the buhk engine has low compression but is running, owner says rings and or sleeves will need to be done at some point soon. but what else should be looked for, or are common “issues” with contessa’s of that vintage?
what are 5 things i should ask the surveyor? owner? i am just a young kid of 26 and have never bought a sailboat the proper way. last one my frined and i bought at 21 just took it on the spot no survey. we managed to cruise from florida to bahams’ for six months but we uncovered a lot of ……surprises. any hints for me? thanks a lot.
