Anchor's Revisited (Rocna)

George Isted at 13/07/2009 10:48:23
On the previous forum there was a little discussion around anchors that are used on Co32’s and what will fit.

Having had a few sleepless nights in the past I decided that anchor design has probably moved on a little in the past 70 years (the CQR was designed in 1933) and I have bought a Rocna 10. The Rocna one of the new generation of fast setting and high holding power anchors and so far (only used twice) it has done exactly “what it says on the tin”.

Most importantly – Does it fit in a Co32 anchor locker?

Answer – Yes but only just.

I hope this post will be of use to others that may be thinking of a change.

Hi George

Thanks for the information. As it only just fits, how much chain/rope do you have in there as well?

David

Hi David,
Concerto has 18m chain and 30m of rope. The chain and rope require placing in the locker rather than just dumping to ensure that the anchor will fit. I’m sure it would take some more but as I race doing this could end in mutiny from the crew.

Hope this helps.

Anchor's Revisited (Rocna)

Hi

I have a 15 meters of chain on 100 feet of rope shackles to a 15 lbs CQR for short stops, a fishermans and a 25 lbs QCR in the locker and 44 meters of chain in the hanging locker. I have a hause pipe I can remove and seal up to get the chain to the Bow roller.

I agree with the other post it is 17 meters of chain that is hard to pull up. so I put a rope on the anchor conected to a bouy. I then motor up to the bouy and lift the anchor up to the roller, you cabn use a sheet winch if required, then recover the chain. Easy. I discovered this in southern France where I was forced to anchore in 20 meters. I was 33 then and it is gripping the chain that hurts, the problem is others then try to nick your Bouy and rope, or moor on it.

So only half the problem sorted

I am contemplating getting a 35 lbs Manson Supreme (similar to Rocna 15). I know it will not fit in the anchor locker, but I’m wondering if it will rest on the bow roller without interfering with the stem. Has anyone tried a Manson Supreme 35 or Rocna 15 on a CO32?

Hi George
I have problems with my CQR setting in sand & was interested in the Rocca 10 you use. Does it hold signifantly better than the CQR

Geoff

Hello Geoff, I had a CQR initially and was never really happy with it and experienced dragging on occasion. The Rocna is in a different world, especially in hard sand where the CQR seemed to drag along the surface with no real penetration. In my experience the Rocna digs in fast and has good holding power. Anchor design has come along way in 70+ years and the tests show that the Rocna, Bugel, Spade and Mason anchors are probably the best of the new generation. Hope this helps. George

Anchor's Revisited (Rocna)

Dear George

I spent nearly an hour the other day trying to persuade a Rocna 10 to fit into our anchor locker. How on earth did you manage it?! The only way I could do so was top remove everything else!

I am now thinking of a Manson Supreme 25 which appears, though all manufacturer’s drawings are cunningly measured differently, to be slightly shorter in length. It was fitting in the last 1" or so of the shank that was the issue.

Regards

Anchor's Revisited (Rocna)

Hi John,
There is a “knack” to it and it normally takes me a moment to remember it if I have not had the anchor out for a while.

From memory I hold the anchor upside down by the flukes and put the shaft in first with this pointing up into the bow, the roll-bar and flukes then fit in and there should be just enough space to turn it in its side when inside the locker so that the locker top shuts. I hope that is correct, it is a snug fit but just goes in. I’m sorry if it doesn’t fit but assuming you have the same size locker and anchor there shouldn’t be a problem. I noted when looking at one of the Co32’s in Jeremy’s yard that the new boats have a larger anchor locker, this is achieved by lowering the floor. Good luck.

Just to update this thread.

Thanks to George taking the time and trouble to film stowing his Rocna 10kg, singlehanded whilst holding the camera in the other if you don’t mind! We have now bought and stowed the same with 30m of chain and 30m of warp.

My only concern is whether the chain and warp is strong enough!

I have said before I think how happy we are with our 16kg Delta in the stemhead (and easily moved aft to lash on deck when on the mooring) and 50m of chain for (mainly) west coast of Scotland. We do have a windlass. Fine last weekend, in L Scresort and Isle Ornsay, in the gales. Not going to be ideal maybe if we do Round Mull next month! Janet

Now the concern is what shackle you use.
A tested shackle can be recognised by the pin diameter being larger than body of the shackle.
You can only fit an 8mm pin thought the chain and I think it has a Safe working load of less than a ton. I would most likely take 2 before it failed. when you consider your cleats have 4x 8mm bolts holding it, it is how you connect that new expensive anchored to the chain that needs consideration.
Some of the swivels you see in the chandlery reduce it all to a 6mm stainless bolt in tension. even worse.
I use a 8mm lifting shackle and have sat out a sustained 45 knots of wind on my 35lb CQR several times. I have confidence in my arrangement
