Some thoughts on insurance from reading another sailing forum….

Like many boat owners I remove electronic equipment (GPS, VHF, Autopilot, etc) from Concerto over the winter while the boat is on the hard as this not only removes the risk of kit being stolen over the winter if someone did break-in but also allows any trapped moisture or electric connections to dry out at home. Unfortunately, this can leave you in a difficult position if your home where to be burgled. On most home contents policies any equipment for your boat would not be covered under the home policy, however your boat insurance policy will only cover boat equipment if it is on the boat when it is stolen. So, if you do bring kit home for the winter AND it is stolen/fire damaged then you could end up with an expensive problem. I still plan to remove kit and take home but thought it was worth warning others of the potential insurance pitfall of doing so…
