Hi,

Any tips for removing this type of saloon table mount? I think it is cast aluminium and may be corroded onto the stainless screws. I can undo the port side nuts – these bolts must be glassed in? But I cannot move the two screws that are closer to the centerline.

I’d like to take it out and clean it and repaint it as all the paint is flaking off anyway.

Only do it when ashore – the port side nuts may not be glassed in – mine weren’t as evidenced by a steady trickle of water many moons ago…
The centreline bolts just go through the cabin sole, but as you’ve discovered it’s a damp and corrosive atmosphere under there. Unless you really need to remove it, I’d strip it and repaint in place.

I’ll second the ‘only do it when ashore’ advice!
The outer bolts are countersunk from the outside of the hull, their heads covered with filler, which fell out when I removed our table.
I managed (with a bit of a struggle) to get the nuts off the inner bolts, reaching under the cabin sole with a spanner.
I couldn’t undo the bolts, they were too well corroded onto the aluminium.

With plenty of small wedges and a lot of prising we got mount off without damaging the cabin sole.
Stripped and sprayed it looks like new. A decent self etching primer will help the paint stay attached.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice – I’ll tidy it up in place! One of those jobs I’ve put off for years, always annoyed by the flakes of paint that come off it and scatter themselves around. About an hour with assorted scrapers, sanders and finally some wet and dry sanding and it’s almost ready to paint. Probably be good for another 41 years…
