Lee cloth construction

Gepke IV at 27/06/2016 21:43:47
Dear fellow sailors,
In the next few weeks i will be preparing my contessa for a crossing from the Netherlands to Norway and back. That means we will be sailing for a few days non stop. My boat has no configuration for a good and safe sleep in the saloon bunks. Does anyone have a tip or some pictures to construct a lee cloth in the most clever way? :)

Thanks,
Robin

I just have a Vinyl/fabric lee-cloth that is tied on the outside of each saloon bunk with two eyes at the top and 5 at the bottom.

On the port side you may wish to consider a lee-cloth that splits the “double” berth into two, this allows someone to sleep on the outside berth while still having somewhere to sit if getting dressed/eating/whatever. I wish I had done this – a future modification!

Peak Flow has a lee cloth in the starboard saloon berth, with an aluminium profile holding the bottom edge (which has a rope sewn into it), and the top held by a rope going to an eye in the woodwork at each end of the berth. The lee cloth is hidden under the cushions when not in use. See photos in this dropbox folder:

I don’t know whether this was an original fit or a modification by a previous owner.

Mine are secured outboard of the bunk rather than on the front. The weight of the sleeper is then helping to secure the lee cloth and this aids keeping it in place without undue stress on the screws holding it.

This does mean that you need more material but mine still stow out of sight without much problem. A smaller (less usefull in hard weather?) mini lee cloth can be fitted in the same way to the dinette single bunk.
