Inner Forestay Fixing

I seem to remember someone ‘posting’ a bit about making/fixing a stronger inner stay fitting but cannot remember where I saw it. Anyone know?

Hi Colin,
I cannot remember any previous post but I did reinforce the inner forestay fiiting a couple of years ago myself. For that I reinforced the bulkhead aft of the anchor chain locker with an extra piece of 12 mm Marine grade plywood which I glued (with epoxy) and screwed to the existing bulkhead on the inside of the boat . During that process I found out that the bulkhead it self was severly delaminated from the top due to a small leakage between the deck and the bulkhead and replaced the upper part of that bulkhead as a first step laminating it in with Epoxy and glasscloth
Next step was to engineer a Stainless steel bracket which I bolted in the Anchor locker against the bulkhead with bolts going through the bulkhead. The bracket it self fitted quite nicely under the 50 mm of overhanging deck on that position. The size of the bracket was approx 250 mm high 50 mm wide and 50 mm deep having an L-shape with the long side against the bulkhead and the 50 mm short side underneath the deck
With this bracket in position you can drill two holes using the two old holes in the deck, through the stainless steel fitting and fit a new D-shape fitting . The Inner forestay fitting will now pull on the bulkhead instead of the deck.
I can imagine that this will not fully explain the concept. If you want I can make some pictures this weekend and send them to you.

The earlier post will probably have referred you to Robin Sims of Sims Marine who has made st steel brackets for several of us, to fit at the rear of teh anchor locker with spreader plate on forpeak inside.

My inner forestay fitting is ahead of the anchor locker. Jeremy Rogers fitted this one – says the deck is very strong right up there.

Resurrecting an old thread, Hi Sealion, I was wondering how your inner forestry fitting is attached? Is it just a backing plate under the deck, or is it linked lower into the hull?

Hi – not sure! I think it just has a backing plate under the deck. I’ll get a picture for you over the weekend and post it here.

Thanks, that’s brilliant. It’s obviously a pretty strong bit of deck there. I’m going to do the same.
