New Sails

I am starting to think about a new set of sails.

Could anyone tell me what they have paid for a new main in Dacron?

Also for a standard No 1, for a furler, in a similar material?

I am just thinking about ball park figures for cruising sails so it does not matter if it was an expensive cut, cloth or loft; tho it helps if you could briefly point this out.

Many thanks.

Doug
I had a new main and furling genoa from Alan Harris at Sailshape in Fowey this season. They are in Hydranet cloth ( see http://www.dimension-polyant.com/en/Hydranet_2_2_1.php ) which is top quality and expensive – sails were £1850 and £2300 respectively – but this includes fully battened main/cars/etc, foam luff, etc.. Alan Harris put a lot of time into building the sails specifically for me and I’m very happy with them. I’d recommend him.

hi Doug
I had a fully battened main from Peter Sanders this year in dacron for less than 1K all in. I’m very pleased with it but I am no expert. Also he was very helpful.

Thanks johnF and Keny.

I have just ordered my main from Chris Scanes. I considered Hydranet but in the end went for the premium offering from Contender.

In price it will fall between the two figures mentioned – should be about £1200, but the maker did reuse some of my old Rutgerson fittings for the long battens. It was ready within the week and I pick it up tomorrow! He reckoned there was 2 1/2 days work in making the sail.

PS

I asked for a quote on a genoa and he said “about the same”

Sabre Sails in Swansea would give you a good quote I’m sure, speak to Simon the loft owner – really helpful and experienced (exNorth Sails loft manager ).
