I am looking at a boat that has a 1990 Volvo engine which I am thinking of changing. Has anyone any thoughts on which is the better Engine, Beta or Yanmar ? Also I notice that most Contessas have a 20hp engine but I have come across one with a Beta 25hp, is 25 HP an advantage or overpowered for a Contessa ?

I have a Yanmar 3YM20. Very happy with it. I have heard good reports about Betas also. I don’t think 5 hp is really significant. With a well matched prop the 21 hp Yanmar pushes my CO32 at hull speed. There is also the 3YM30 (same engine as 3YM20 but longer stroke.) It will fit the CO32 engine compartment if you really crave more horsepower.

By the way, I noticed that Beta 25 has the lube oil filter on the port side. At least on my boat, that would make it pretty difficult to access.

The freshwater cooled Beta is a great piece of kit & very well finished. I have sailed boats with Beta & Yanmar engines & both are good – better than the Volvo which tends to have engine/gearbox connection problems.

I fitted a Vetus 25, and am not entering the Beta debate. But I am glad I fitted the extra 5hp on few occasions it has been very handy, I would rather have it than not.
