Rudder shaft length

Just a quick one – ‘Contiguity’ is on the hard and among other jobs needs her cutless bearing changing. However, the boat has been placed so that her rudder is directly above a raised kerb. She is surrounded by other boats so moving her at this stage may not be easy. I need to know the length of the rudder shaft to determine whether the rudder has enough clearance to be dropped is situ.

I don’t have the exact measurements but from a picture in the “how to remove and replace the rudder” technical paper I would estimate the length of the shaft to be approximately half the length of the rudder. Take a look at the paper and you will see what I mean. Hope this helps

Provided the boat is on level ground there should be sufficient clearance to drop the rudder OK. I have the Autocad drawing (on my Office Computer) I produced for the Technical Section so will check and ‘post’ again.
As an alternative you could have a look at the original PDF drawings on the Website and interpolate using a known dimension (there are dimensions on the drawings) However the quality of the drawings is a bit suspect due to fading – I know as it took me hours to convert them into Autocad – my PDF to ACAD convertor resulting in a black blob!

Just had a look at my ‘not to scale’ sterngear arrangement drawing on the website. Whilst not to scale the ratios should not be too far out and indicate that the shaft is quite a bit less in length than 1/2 the blade depth as suggested by George.

I had to give this measurement to JR for him to make our new rudder. Apparently they’re all slightly different. The total length from the top of the blade to the end of the stock was 430mm, 367mm to the underside of the tiller block which is just above the start of the taper. The rudder tube in the boat was 365mm top to bottom, including the bearings.
