My stern gland is a bit leaky, but a couple of turns on the grease pump stems the flow.

Silly question; is it possible to replace the packing in the water, or is that a ‘bit brave’ and a lift-out is necessary?

Unfortunately I don’t know. I suppose it’s not relevant that the grease pump is a bog-standard brass one?

Thinking about it, and looking more closely, I suppose the first thing to do is to remove the Aquadrive flange as the stern gland packing nut probably won’t come off in the little space there is. Must remember to get some whacking great adjustable spanners.

What alternatives are there for stern glands?

It should be possible to ease off the stern-gland locking nut and tighten the packing a smidge before re-tightening the locking nut. Be careful not to tighten too much thought as it will start getting hot in use.
