The third round of the Contessa 32 Inshore points series was held this weekend with 9 boats racing from Cowes to Poole on Saturday, returning on Sunday. Saturday’s forecast suggested little wind and some rain but remained dry all day with 8-12kts making it a stress-free and easy sail to Poole. Muscadet and Bugler both had a cracking start from the central Solent with Concerto who was to windward but in less favorable tide slowly working its way to the front with Drumbeat following and the rest of the fleet very close behind. After exiting the Solent the fleet spread out with Drumbeat very nearly catching Concerto who was self-handicapped with a smaller genoa. Concerto finished 1st, Drumbeat 2nd with Bugler of Hornet sneaking into 3rd at the last minute. All crews enjoyed some wobbly-juice and nibbles kindly supplied by Alice on Panache before retiring to Parkstone Yacht club for an excellent BBQ dinner.
Sunday started bright and sunny but as the fleet motored to the start there were black clouds on the horizon which provided light drizzle for much of the day. However there was a fresh breeze from the south-west of 18-25 kts and after a downwind start all boats enjoyed a fast passage east under spinnaker with very little between the boats in terms of speed. Again it was Drumbeat and Concerto leading the charge and despite trying everything Concerto just could not get past. After pushing tide through the Hurst narrows most boats went north to the mainland side while Connie went south to the island-shore in an effort to try something different. Minstrel Boy seemed to take the middle and shortest route and the tide did not seem to slow them too much. Drumbeat finished 1st with Concerto taking 2nd and L’aquarelle picking up third.
Great to see such a mixture of crews on the boats this weekend. Particularly nice to see the two young lads joining Mark and Roger on Drumbeat (+ Stella on Sunday). Joining Mike and Julie on L’aquarelle was the lovely Molly who did a great job of hoovering up all the dropped crisps on the pontoon. Also great to have Darren and Andy join us with the freshly refurbished Bugler of Hornet we hope to see you out racing with us again soon. Dave Feltham even popped in having sailed around from Exmouth in his Contessa.
